What Are The 4 Most Effective Methods To Learn German?




First of all, there are literally thousands methods to learn German. Go to a foreign country, find a friend, find a language learning program, get flashcards, get immersed…

The four ones that worked for me are (note that there is no “magic” here, every method has it’s advantages and disadvantages):

1. Speak, read and write like HELL

It is the most uncomfortable method. It is all about trial and error. If you prefer to use it, I guarantee you will rapidly immerse yourself into the language.

Method: Go and find native German speakers. Speak with them. When you find something unclear, Google it. Ask them for the rule. Apply it. Make thousands of errors. Go and write and read German forums. Also, when you make a mistake, search and then fix it.

The disadvantage is that it is not at all good for beginners. And it can get you easily discouraged. I don’t use this very often because of this reason. Instead, I prefer to combine it with the second one which is…

2. If you are a total beginner and have no clue in German I have one word for you: PIMSLEUR. Go and get it. NOW. In 30 days you will be 100000% motivated to keep on going. I am currently to Level 2 and I am blown away how much this thing is effective. Also, after Pimsleur, take Michel Thomas course.

The advantage is that you get motivated quickly. The disadvantage is that you do not get fast progress like with the first method.

3. Language learning support communities. They are crucial. WordReference Forums and About forums seems to be the most active ones. You ask a question, you get an answer within hours. There is no disadvantages here. Just, do not forget, when you become decent to come back and help the newcomers!

4. Language learning programs. They are super cool. Rosetta Stone is very cool. And Rocket German also. I recommend Rocket German as a beginner tool especially because of it’s simplicity. They also offer a support forum so you have everything there.

Overall, none of these methods are perfect. But if you combine them you can get astounding results.
